Having finally had enough of being a doorman for the cats, I finally got Roj to fit my cat flaps, one from the garden into the conservatory and one from the conservatory to the dinning room. The fitting took one hour and then the fun began. How do you train cats to get through the flaps, after extensive research on the net I decided to go for the peg method, I clipped open the flaps with pegs and waited for the imminent return of the cats from their afternoon jaunts.
Olly returned first, he slowly crept up to the first flap, a major sniffing session followed before he gingerly passed through; he turned and again gave a major sniffing session the other side of the flap. For him to enter the house he had to do the same routine again, he did not fail me, Olly was in, yea I know the flaps were up but it’s a start. Rico next, to my surprise he was in the house and behind me, he must have been upstairs, he walked over the dining room flap, one sniff and shot into the kitchen,, he did not like it. I picked him up and put him in front of it, he tried to get away but I was firm and shuffled him into the hole, against his wishes he shuffled through, he did not turn to sniff the flap but decided to venture over to the one leading into the garden, this one he did manage, then it was a game for them both, in, out, in, out and so on, I just left them to it. The next day was to be the test, flaps down.
Just after breakfast both cats were out, so we dropped the dining room flap down. Olly was first to return, he came through the open outside flap but noticed the dining room flap down, he jumped up onto a chair and sat looking through the window at me barking his orders to get me to let him in, no chance, he had to work it out himself. Knowing he had gained entry through the flap before he jumped down and tried to chew his way through, a few kicks and nose shuffles he did it, he really did it, he was in and just to make sure we spotted his achievement he went straight out again, oh Olly, good boy.
Rico, well, he returned and too jumped on the chair, no way was he going to try the flap, so I slightly opened it for him and coaxed him down off the chair, after a few nose shoves he too was through,, it’s the start we wanted and better and quicker than we thought, well done boys.
